Event Description : Niti Jain’s solo show of abstract paintings in oil on canvas titled Meditative Hues will be on at Gallerie Ganesha.

Colour, in fact, has always dominated Jain’s colossal canvases – the largest one in the current show is about 6 feet by 6 feet – and even her first show in Delhi in 2010 titled Abstract Recensions was applauded for its powerful brush strokes.  “I have been exploring colour and my work from the very beginning till now is the result of this search,” says Jain, who studied art at Slade School of Fine Art (2003-5) and also trained under veteran artist Rameshwar Broota at Triveni Kala Sangam for ten years.

“Colour encompasses our visual and psychological world," she adds, "My work is a philosophical and practical connection with it. It’s an experiential journey with colour as a tool to feel it, see it, perceive it and search for it. It is the beginning and the end. A journey which ends... when I reach a monolithic whole.”

Just like her fascination with colour, Jain has also remained loyal to the genre of abstraction, one which is often sidelined in the blitzkrieg of new media and figurative-narrative images. As Parul Dave Mukherji, Professor at School of Art And Aesthetics, JNU writes about Jain’s work: “Amidst the clamour for the radical and the rebellious, Niti’s decision to move against the tide seems a statement of independence and assertion of calm self confidence. She is a painter who stands on her own, totally secure in her own skin and her decision to side with abstraction. Her colossal canvases offer not just transcendental meditation but a phenomenal experience through their sheer physical scale and theatrical interplay of colours. The knobbly or uneven surface almost takes the eyes on a bumpy ride across the canvas, translating the visual impact into a kinaesthetic journey.”

“Abstraction comes more naturally to me as I have always been partial towards the geometric and flat patterns rather than floral and narrative ones,” admits Jain.

However, there has been a marked evolution in her work. For her previous show, she had created abstracts whose colours were louder, strokes more vigorous and the movement of the brush more pronounced.  Meditative Hues, in contrast, is a calmer rendition with a subtlety that speaks of an inherent spirituality that comes with age and experience.

Since Jain is a colourist, any visual stimuli works as an inspiration for her - from the colour of wet mud to peeling plaster, from the paintings of American artist Cy Twombly renowned for large-scale, freely scribbled, calligraphic works to Mark Rothko’s abstract expressionism. “Among the Indian artists, I admire K.S. Kulkarni, Sohan Qadri, Neeraj Goswami and Dipak Banerjee to name a few,” says Jain
