Four conversations, specifically, about ‘border’ spaces, and the literary production, and translation practices in those spaces. For this edition of TFC, we will focus on texts from the Punjab and Northeast India. Our objective, in this, would be as follows:
To examine and deliberate on the representation of the Partitions of the Indian subcontinent in literary and cultural texts produced in the Punjab and in the Northeast of India during specific time periods in the past, and to look at how translation practices in the contemporary, or even attempts at a re-telling of these narratives of a past have negotiated with the order of telling in the source language text and the ‘re-telling’ of the phenomena of displacement, and severance in these texts in new forms, through new media, written, or graphic.
Our focus areas for each of the four conversations would be as follows:
Punjabiyat, Partition and Translation – Narrating Riots and Crossings
Two Valleys, Partitions, Borders – Bengal, Assam and What Remains
Post-Partition, Commemoration, Trauma – The Partition Retold
The Border in Translation.
