Threadwork, papier-mâché, terracotta, lac and meenakari are all ancient techniques that today find new forms and styles in the jewellery ranges of modern designers. Young textile designers innovate with block-printing techniques, or in the motifs & graphic designs that are executed on the looms of traditional ikat weavers; whilst Bhagalpur’s silk weaving tradition evolves to echo today’s consumer’s tastes and colour sensibility. Bamboo proves its modern versatility as a material that can be finely woven to appear light & airy or as a solid, durable and eco-friendly furniture option, innovatively combined with materials as diverse as papier-mâché or LED fibre optics!
This first Dastkar DESIGN FAIR will feature a KARVADA section dedicated to the work of graduates of the only design school in India set up specifically for craftspeople – The Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya: a Design Institution for Traditional Artisans. In parallel to the India Art Fair, the folk & tribal art specialist Arts of the Earth Gallery will showcase regional art from Warli or Madhubani to lesser known pictorial forms from States like Assam or Gujarat. At Dastkar DESIGN FAIR taste a variety of cuisines at the Food Court, from Old Delhi Mughlai to Maharashtra cuisine, Chaat and Parathas along with cookies & cakes and organic teas.
