Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Interrogating Social Justice’ series) on ‘How we Failed Social Justice : The mismatch of constitutional provisions and institutional arrangements’ by Dr. D. Shyam Babu, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi.
Abstract : Creating a just society is always a process and differences on the direction and pace of change are natural. The talk will strive to delve into three interrelated aspects: One, at the level of ideas and ideals, India has strayed from creating a just society and plunged into murky politics of social justice. In the present context, social justice is merely identity politics out to get political power. It is a statist enterprise. Two, constitutional provisions aimed at creating a just society, admirable as they are, contain several contradictions. These contradictions are not only not conducive to realise the ideal but, often, counterproductive. Three, institutions created to accomplish social justice are mechanical additions but carry more responsibilities and few powers. A rethink on these aspects is an essential first step to realise a just society.
Speaker : Dr. D Shyam Babu is a former journalist and now a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi. His areas of research include reforms and social justice, caste in life, emancipation through entrepreneurship, etc. He co-edited India Mosaic and The Dalit Question (with Bibek Debroy), and Caste in Life (with R S Khare). He is part of an ongoing project headed by Devesh Kapur and Chandra Bhan Prasad on Dalit entrepreneurs.
