Event Description : 'Parallel Postulates' a group art show by Anita Dube, Aakash Nihalani, Martand Khosla, Mona Rai.

Nature Morte is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by four artists. The exhibition is organized around the continued interest in geometry, mathematical constructions, diagrammatic structures, and abstraction. Four artists approach the subjects from various directions, in a wide array of diverse mediums.

Anita Dube (born 1958, based in New Delhi) transforms found objects into mysterious constructions that often harbor language and imagery. One of her most characteristic materials are the copper and enamel eyes used on temple idols, here used as points to construct meandering drawings directly on to the wall, reminiscent of tantric diagrams and rangoli.

Aakash Nihalani (born 1986, based in New York) crafts slickly fabricated wall reliefs of steel in high intensity colors. His geometric patterns are open-ended and modular, referencing the Op Art of the 1960s but also Islamic architecture and the growth structures of cells. Included in the exhibition will be a site-specific installation made from day-glo tape, responding to the gallery space.

Martand Khosla (born 1975, based in New Delhi) is an architect whose art practice is deeply informed by his experience as a builder. His signature material is the reddish brown dust of bricks, employed as printing ink, pigment, the skin of objects, and the matter of forms. Khosla re-creates pseudo-scientific instruments from the 19th Century and invents new taxonomies to examine social hierarchies in contemporary India.

Mona Rai (born 1947, based in New Delhi) is a painter who explores the expressive potential of different materials. Three recent works are constructed primarily of small pieces of brocade fabrics, with the addition of pigments, metallic foils, threads, and string. She creates shimmering fields of color that dazzle and oscillate in the light, abstractions informed by crafts production and ritual art forms.
