Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘The Deep History of Caste and Power’ by Prof. Sumit Guha, University of Texas at Austin, USA.

Abstract : ‘Caste’ is today almost universally perceived as an ancient and unchanging Indian institution preserved solely by deep-seated religious ideology. Yet the word itself is an importation from sixteenth-century Europe that assumed a new meaning in the multi-ethnic Spanish and Portuguese empires in the Americas and Asia. Political practices built around it have not have not lost their potency down to the present day.  This talk will survey the long history of the practices amalgamated under this label and shows their connection to changing patterns of social and political power down to the present.

Speaker : Prof. Sumit Guha is Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin, USA.
