Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘History and Theory in a Global Frame’ by Prof. Ethan Kleinberg, Wesleyan University, USA.

Abstract : This lecture will discuss the history and mission of the journal History and Theory, some of the major trends in current historical theory, and the role of the journal as an international hub for scholarly discourse. Specifically, the talk will focus on the ways that on line social networks can lead to international connections where varying conceptions of "history," the past and, historical scholarship can be drawn into conversation both virtually and physically.  The speaker will discuss recent events and trends in Europe, China, and South America. Finally, the speaker would like to open discussion about current work in Indian scholarship and ways of fostering greater connections between History and Theory and interested scholars in India.

Speaker : Prof. Ethan Kleinberg is Executive Editor of the journal History and Theory  and  Professor of History and Letters at Wesleyan University where he is Director of the Center for the Humanities. Prof. Kleinberg’s wide-ranging scholarly work spans across the fields of history, critical theory, philosophy, comparative literature and religion. He is the author of Generation Existential: Martin Heidegger’s Philosophy in France, 1927-61, which was awarded the 2006 Morris D. Forkosch prize for the best book in intellectual history, by the Journal of the History of Ideas. His co-edited volume Presence: Philosophy, History, and Cultural Theory of the Twenty-First Century was just published by Cornell University Press. He is presently in the process of completing two book length monographs:  The Myth of Emmanuel Levinas on the Talmudic Lectures the French-Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas presented in Paris between 1960 and 1990, and Haunting History about deconstruction and the writing of history.
