Event Description : Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to ‘On the way to unity: Dag Hammarskjold’s political wisdom’ a talk by Dr. Roger Lipsey, Author of the newly published Dag Hammarskjold.
The lecture will be preceded by a screening of a documentary film on DVD, created by Athena Film (Sweden) for the 2005 birth centenary of Dag Hammarskjöld. It conveys effectively the major elements of his life and particularly his UN career. After the film showing, the speaker would briefly comment on the film, especially with regard to the recently released Hammarskjöld Commission report on the background and possible causes of the air crash that took Hammarskjöld's life. From there he would go on to speak primarily of his political wisdom--his approach to the community of nations and diplomacy, and the personal discipline he followed as both a statesman and a lifelong spiritual seeker.
Speaker : Author, art historian, editor, translator, and independent scholar, Dr. Lipsey has been associated with Indian cultural studies since the publication in 1977 of his trilogy of works by and about Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. Following the model of Coomaraswamy, he has since researched and written along a continuum of concerns from visual art, literature, and spirituality to the needs of society. Biography has often proved to be the medium through which he approaches topics. Dr. Lipsey’s most recent book, Hammarskjöld: A Life (the first major biography in 40 years), was published to uniformly excellent reviews in March 2013 by the University of Michigan Press. He has since lectured on Dag Hammarskjöld’s life and thought at United Nations headquarters under the auspices of the deputy secretary-general, at the UN Summer Academy, and in other venues. He is expected at a conference near Vienna this November, again to explore the Hammarskjöld legacy. Dr. Lipsey is also a recognised expert on the monk and author Thomas Merton. His groundbreaking book, Angelic Mistakes: The Art of Thomas Merton (2006), received an award from the International Thomas Merton Society as the best book on Merton in its two-year period. Dr. Lipsey’s website, www.dag-hammarskjold.com, explores primarily the political wisdom of the secretary-general and provides links to online resources, including reviews of Hammarskjöld: A Life and webcasts and audio recordings of some of Dr. Lipsey’s recent presentations.
