Workshop Description : Intermediate Contemporary Dance Technique with Parijat Desai
In her choreography and class, Parijat looks at how we might move between divergent qualities and pathways in the body. The class utilizes floor and standing exercises and some improvisation to mobilize the joints and warm the muscles as well as to encourage fluid, connected movement. Standing and center exercises challenge the dancer to find both gravity/groundedness and length in the body, to carve precise shape and to find swing and flow. Class will culminate with a short phrase of original choreography.

Suitable for intermediate to professional contemporary, modern, jazz, or ballet dancers. Dancers specializing in other forms are welcome, provided they have training in modern/contemporary dance.

CREATIVE PROJECT: BUILDINGS, BODIES, BREATH
As a 2013-2014 Nehru-Fulbright Scholar, Parijat will be in India until July 2014 teaching and researching a new work. Her project involves architectural sites, movement and film, and as a first phase, she will be visiting various Islamic architectural sites around Delhi this month. Parijat Desai is a dancer and choreographer based in Brooklyn, New York. With her ensemble Parijat Desai Dance Company, Parijat has been creating and performing a kinetic blend of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance since 2000. The New York Times called her work “fresh ... bold” and a “seamless blending of the new and old.” PDDC has been presented by venues around the U.S., Canada and India. During 2013–2014 she will be a visiting artist affiliated with Darpana Academy of Performing Arts/Ahmedabad and with Gati Dance Forum/Delhi, teaching contemporary dance and conducting historical, site, and movement research toward a new creative work. www.parijatdesai.org.
