Abstract : The presentation will discuss that a complex of control and domination developed within the Shrivaishnava community through negotiation and accommodation between different groups, primarily the mathas (monastic organizations) and acharyapurushas (individual Shrivaishnava leaders). Situated within the context of the Vijayanagara state, these networks further generated a series of competitive engagements in the public arena of the temples and emphasized the need to reconfigure with the private sphere of the household as a source of patronage and to acquire disciples. This had two consequences – one, the notions of devotion and religiosity in the hagiographical and theological texts were redefined and, two, modes of religious control were articulated and legitimized through the idea of a spiritual lineage. Such diversities however did not lead to the breaking up of the Shrivaishnava community. Rather, there was a reconfiguration of these multiple identities into two groups, the Vatakalais and Tenkalais. The paper will analyze these developments by focusing on four areas: 1) the evolution and development of the mathas and acharyapurushas within the Shrivaishnava organization; 2) the ways in which both of them articulated their role and identity; 3) the perceptions of the temple and household as a public and private space of devotion respectively, and the relation between the two; 4)the ramifications of these developments on the Shrivaishnava ideals of bhakti, prapatti and a guru and the community-consciousness that evolved subsequently.
