FROM WEB TO CLOUDS by PROF. ALBERTO MASONI Research Director, INFN- National Institute of Nuclear Physics - Italy, Scientific associate at CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics)

“Every time I take the corridor next to my Office at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics I cannot help giving a look at a large Bronze Plate with the inscription: Here the WEB was born.
I still remember when in 1992, at the Computing in High Energy Physics Conference, in Annecy, the poster by Tim Berners-Lee with the title: The World Wide Web….
I think not everybody is aware of the fact the web is a byproduct of Particle Physics research...In high-tech, from mobile phones to tablet to notebooks we see clouds everywhere… The concept of cloud is nothing but an evolution of the computing grid…another idea developed in the context of High Energy Physics Experiments”.
Alberto Masoni’s publications record exceeds 260 papers, with more than 36.000 citations. From 2006 to 2012 he directed two European Commission projects dedicated to S&T cooperation with India. Presently he is the Project director of one of the Six Joint Research Projects of Particular Relevance selected within the frame of the Executive Programme of Scientific and Technological Cooperation between Italian and Indian Governments for the years 2012-2014.
