Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘India and the wider World’ series) on ‘India and the Third Industrial Revolution’ by Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Unique Identification Authority of India, New Delhi.
Abstract : Robert Gordon, the economist, in his paper has linked growth in the developed world to a series of Industrial Revolutions. To quote “The analysis links periods of slow and rapid growth to the timing of the three Industrial Revolutions (IR's), that is, IR #1 (steam, railroads) from 1750 to 1830; IR #2 (electricity, internal combustion engine, running water, indoor toilets, communications, entertainment, chemicals, petroleum) from 1870 to 1900; and IR #3(computers, the web, mobile phones) from 1960 to present.”
Developing countries by and large have missed many of the advances of the IR #2. On the other hand the technologies of IR#3 are available almost instantaneously throughout the world. This leads to the conundrum that there are 'more cellphones than toilets'. Some people have argued that we should first wait for IR #2 benefits before we adopt IR #3 benefits. This talk argues that on the contrary this instant availability of IR #3
products and technologies gives a unique opportunity to find 'leapfrog' solutions to many of the problems that are present due to inadequate availability of IR #2 technologies and postulates some possible solutions .
Speaker : Mr. Nandan Nilekani is currently the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)—which aims to provide a unique identification number for all residents of India—in the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister. Mr. Nandan Nilekani was most recently the co-Chairman of the board of directors of Infosys Technologies Limited, which he co-founded in 1981. Serving as Director on the company's board since its inception to July 2009, he has held various posts at Infosys, including Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, President, and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Nilekani co-founded India's National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) as well as the Bengaluru chapter of The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE). He is the President of Governing body of NCAER, the National Council of Applied Economic Research, India’s oldest and largest, premier, independent economic research institute, and also a member of the board of governors of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). Born in Bengaluru, Mr. Nilekani received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He was named the Corporate Citizen of the Year at the Asia Business Leaders Award (2004) organized by CNBC. In 2005 he received the prestigious Joseph Schumpeter prize for innovative services in economy, economic sciences and politics.
In 2003, he was awarded Fortune Magazine’s ‘Asia’s Businessman of the year’ and in 2006, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. Time magazine listed him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2006 and 2009. He is the author of Imagining India, which was one of the finalists for the FT-Goldman Sachs Book Award for the year 2009.
