Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to the Weekly Seminar on ‘Counting People, Counting Money : The Bhils in Mewar in the 19th century’ by Dr. Hari Sen, Ramjas College, University of Delhi, Delhi.

Abstract : This is a discussion of the troubled relationship between the Bhils of Mewar, in southern Rajputana, and colonial modernity. In the late-nineteenth century the Anglo-Sisodia regime in the Indian State of Mewar introduced a census of the population and new systems of assessing and collecting taxes on cultivation, on liquor and on the transport of opium. In 1881 the Bhils rebelled against these new systems and challenged their controls, monopolies and technologies.  The rebellion raised many questions and it contested the state’s claims to a sovereign right to ‘know’ its subjects and its power to determine subsistence and the use of common property resources.

Speaker : Dr. Hari Sen is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Ramjas College, University of Delhi, Delhi. He has worked on the social and political history of colonial Rajasthan.
