Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Rethinking History’ series) on ‘Nationalism, Nation-building and the Historian of Mughal India’ by Prof. Farhat Hasan, University of Delhi, Delhi.

Abstract : The development of Mughal historiography in the colonial and post-colonial period has been implicated in the project of the nation-state. This has indeed crucially shaped the modern historiography on the Mughal period, and its epistemic foundations. In this paper, the speaker has made an effort to examine the relations of Mughal historiography with the nation-state, and to situate several crucial evasions and silences in the historical narrative as resulting from its overbearing influence. The other effort of this paper is to examine the representation of Mughal history in the nationalist political thought, and see how history and the political process interacted with each other, in the representation of the idea of composite culture as a defining attribute of India.

Speaker : Prof. Farhat Hasan teaches history at the Department of History, University of Delhi, Delhi. He is the author of State and Locality in Mughal India: Power Relations in Western India, 1572-1740.
