Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the India and the wider World series) on ‘The Making of the McMahon Line and its Fate, 1900-47’ by Dr. V.C. Bhutani, Formerly University of Delhi, Delhi.

Abstract : This is result of my study of the Sino-Indian boundary question on which I have been engaged, sometimes full time and sometimes in spare time from my other duties, over the last 46 years. I have based the study on Indian archives, Assam archives, Tibetan archives, and British archives, and private papers of some governors-general. The presentation will take a look at Tibetan history, Tibetan relations with China and with India (under British rule). It takes a close look at developments at the Simla conference 1913-14 and the agreement which produced the McMahon Line and then at what happened in the areas up to the boundary brought under British control. It concludes with a brief look at Nehru's handling of NEFA in 1946-47 when he was part of government before transfer of power.

Speaker : Dr. V.C. Bhutani taught Chinese political geography at University of Delhi, 1988-2005, retired as reader (2005). Presently working on (1) the Sino-Indian boundary question and (2) India-Pakistan relations.
