Event Description : Akshara Theatre presents Gopal Sharman’s internationally acclaimed stage production, The Ramayana (in English)

Akshara Theatre presents four performances of Gopal Sharman’s internationally play The Ramayana: a contemporary interpretation of the epic.

The Ramayana  was originally performed by the celebrated actress Jalabala Vaidya as a one-woman performance, on Broadway, London’s West End, United Nations Headquarters, National Theatres of Europe, Canada, as far as the Fiji Islands, as well as in 35 Indian cities and towns: from Mumbai to Manipal, Kolkata to Jammu, Delhi to Calicut -- to packed houses, rave reviews and standing ovations worldwide – creating dramatic history.

In this production of The Ramayana, Jalabala performs the opening and closing of the play -- as the Contemporary Person, the Katha Vachaka, Dasharatha and Kaikeyi at the start of the play, and Rama and Sita at the end of the play, while a cast of superbly talented young actors performs the other scenes creating an exciting and innovative theatrical experience,.

The actors includes Jalabala’s talented grand-daughter Nisa as Sita, Vikalp Mudgal as Rama and Angad Thakur as Ravana. Romit plays Bharata, Rakesh Palisetty plays Lakshmana,  Shaily Priya Pandey plays Mandodari, while Hanuman is played by two actors: Mahant Shah and Dhruv Shetty.

Critics and audience members the world over have praised the dramatic intensity of Gopal Sharman’s script, which explores the human characters of Rama and Sita, with reverence, delicacy and insight, through some of the most exquisite stage writing in modern theatre. When The Ramayana was performed on Broadway, it was hailed as “India’s Gift to Broadway” by the New York Times. The Times, London found it  “Noble, commanding and heroic”. The Indian Express exclaimed “The Ramayana is etched in tremendous beauty”, while critic Raghava Menon, wrote in the Hindustan Times “This Ramayana challenges you to look at the meaning of the story from a brand new angle.”

Together, Gopal, Jalabala and their young cast explore the magic and mystery of Rama – “in whose grace the dumb babble love’s profundities and the lame prance gaily over unscaled peaks.”
