Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Rethinking History’ series) on ‘From Erode to Volga: Periyar EVR’s European Tour, 1931- 32’ by Prof. A. R. Venkatachalapathy, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai.

Abstract : Periyar E.V. Ramasamy (1879–1973), the leader of the Dravidian movement, went on a year-long tour to Europe during 1931–32 and spent considerable periods of time in the Soviet Union, and in Germany and Britain. Periyar’s European tour made a deep impact on his world view and had lasting implications for progressive politics in South India. Beginning his political career as a Congressman, in 1925 Periyar had broken away from it to form the Self-Respect movement. His movement was built on the foundation that caste and religion were at the core of pervasive inequality. Following his European tour Periyar reoriented his movement towards incorporating socialist (economic) ideals and an anti-colonial agenda into his social movement.  Drawing from a larger biographical study, this lecture focuses on a hectic and event-packed year in the long life of Periyar to explore the impact of movement across spaces, and the power of ideas refracted through the life and work of an iconoclastic leader.
