Workshop Description : Contemporary Dance Technique with Parijat Desai.
How do you move from a gyrating spiral into a razor-sharp slice? How do you shift from a frenetic geometric phrase into a single, soft gesture? How do you punch, then ooze, then dangle, then carve, all with clarity and ease?
Trained in American modern/postmodern dance forms, Indian classical dance, and other movement practices, Parijat experienced radically different approaches to the body; and in developing hybrid choreographies, she’s found herself constantly negotiating tensions between styles.
Since many of us are creating or performing mash-ups, Parijat offers class in U.S. contemporary dance techniques, and looks at how we might move between divergent qualities and pathways in the body. Exercises and dance phrases aim to encourage awareness of both internal mechanics and external architecture of our movements.
Parijat Desai is a dancer and choreographer based in New York City. With her ensemble Parijat Desai Dance Company, Parijat has been creating and performing a kinetic blend of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance since 2000. The New York Times called her work “fresh ... bold” and a “seamless blending of the new and old.” This year, in collaboration with the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective/NYC (sawcc.org), she initiated a participatory movement process called Freedom. Safety. NOW. following the horrific December 2012 gang-rape in Delhi.
