Lee Ranaldo
Lee Ranaldo is best known as the founding member and guitarist for legendary American band Sonic Youth. He was rated #33 in Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists in the World. His band Lee Ranaldo & The Dust also features fellow Sonic Youth collaborator Steve Shelley who is a well known drummer and producer. Lee and his band The Dust (Steve Shelley, Alan Licht, Tim Lüntzel) are getting ready to hit the road in Autumn 2013 in support of Lee’s second solo (and first band) effort, Last Night on Earth, a follow-up to 2012’s Between the Times & the Tides.
The new record will be released in October 2013. This will be Lee’s second fully self-penned, song-based album. After a year of touring behind the last record, the band is now fully road-tested, and features Steve Shelley on drums, Alan Licht on guitar, and new bassist Tim Luntzel. Fellow traveler John Medeski again puts in an appearance playing keyboards on the new disc.
Although performing with the band is his current focus, Lee continues to perform experimental events with partner Leah Singer, and in June 2013 premiered a new work for Berlin-based string ensemble Kaleidoskop (with Lee on acoustic guitar) with the group at the Holland Festival on June 14, 2013. Lee will perform the piece again in January 2014 at the Sydney Festival, Australia.
Lee's visual and sound works have been on view recently at gallery and museum shows in Halifax, Brussels, New York City, Copenhagen, Miami, Vienna, Prague, Antwerp, Bratislava, Auckland, and Salt Lake City. His latest collections of writings, How Not To Get Played On The Radio [SoundBarn Press 2011] and Against Refusing [Waterrow Press, 2010], enlist internet spam as a springboard for poetry. A collection of his writings is slated for release in 2014 from Oxford’s SALT Press.
Menwhopause
Menwhopause has been credited for being the first Indian band to have stuck to playing original compositions and distributing their music for free over the internet. Their first EP called The Story Begins was released online as a free download in 2003 under the band’s own label – The Middle Earth Company – which has been credited by many as kickstarting the present indie-music scene in India.
