"Speaking of Aesthetics in the Face of God Mohras and mohra-makers of the Kullu Valley" an illustrated lecture by Alka Hingorani at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Mehrauli Road > 5pm on 4th October 2013
Time : 5:00 pm
Event Description : 'Speaking of Aesthetics in the Face of God Mohras and mohra-makers of the Kullu Valley' an illustrated lecture by Alka Hingorani.
Alka Hingorani has studied mohras or face-images of deities in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. These mohras, made in thin sheets of gold and silver, are religious objects and objects of art, and the artisans who make them are both story-tellers and artists. This presentation tells the story of the making of an object and of an artist, addressing two questions:
1. Can a religious object also be an object of art to its primary audience, i.e., to the patrons who commission and then venerate it? A religious object is “perfect” by definition, open to enjoyment through veneration, not critical appreciation. The question then is, can the object lend itself to critique and appreciation in ways that are not inflected by religious ardour? The particular aesthetic environment of the hill-villages of Kullu offers a compelling response to this long-standing conundrum in Indian art history.
2. The artisan who makes the mohras belongs to one of the lower castes in the social hierarchy, but while he makes the mohra he occupies a liminal status. How does he negotiate the oscillation of his status and the consequent ambivalence of his identity in the deeply entrenched caste hierarchy of Himachal society?
Alka Hingorani's interests in Indian art lie geographically in the lower Himalayas, and thematically in issues of aesthetics and identity. Her book on mohras and mohra -makers in Himachal Pradesh is called, " Making Faces: Self and Image Creation in a Himalayan Valley " (Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 2013; New Delhi: Niyogi Books, 2013). She holds an MA in Photography and a PhD in History of Art from the University of California, Berkeley. She is Associate Professor in the design department at IIT-Bombay.
