Event Description : “Ghazals to Commemorate Begum Akhtar’s 100 Years” Puja Mehra Gupta’s Musical Journey continues with a soul-stirring rendition of Ghazals to commemorate Begum Akhtar’s Birth Centenary.

Akhtari Bai Faizabadi or Begum Akhtar as she was better known, was born on October 7, 1914, and was a very well known Indian Singer of Ghazals, Dadra and Thumri. Highly acclaimed and celebrated she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Academy, and was the well deserving holder of the title Mallika-e-Ghazal.
Puja, who inherited the music tradition from her mother who hailed from Lahore, began her musical journey at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi. She is a protégé of Smt. Shanti Hiranand who is herself the foremost disciples of Begum Akhtar and a Padma Bhushan recipient.     
Puja will lend her soulful lilting voice and musical expression to the poetry of great poets of the last three centuries like Ghalib, Faakir, Shakeel Badayuni and Faiz among others.
A deep passion for music, and a commitment to keep this traditional and striking form of gayaki alive is what propels Puja on this difficult journey.                

Puja believes that music is an endless ocean and has taken the plunge into its depths.  For her this journey is as much about exploring the world of music as it is about discovering her own self.
