Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Science, Society and Nature’ series) on ‘An Evergreen Revolution in Eastern India: Are we on the right track?’ by Dr. Aditi Mukherji, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu.

Abstract : Recent years have seen a renewed policy focus towards agriculture in eastern Indian states leading to calls for a Green Revolution in the east. Using primary and secondary data from West Bengal, this presentation argues that traditional model of extension using ‘mini-kits’ of high yielding varieties of seeds and fertilizers alone is not sufficient for a second Green Revolution. Instead, there is a need to tackle the unique ‘energy-irrigation’ nexus in the region – a nexus, characterized by abundant groundwater, but by acute energy scarcity to pump that groundwater. It discusses some of the recent policies of Government of West Bengal in promoting groundwater irrigation through enhanced rural electrification.

Speaker : Dr. Aditi Mukherji is a Theme Leader, Water and Air at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and is based in Kathmandu, Nepal. At ICIMOD she leads a group of scientists in their work on water and climate change in the Hindu-Kush Himalayas. Previously, she was a Senior Researcher at International Water Management Institute (IWMI), New Delhi office.  She has a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and her research revolves around institutions and policies of water resources management.  She has worked in South Asia, Nile basin and in Central Asia. She has published over 50 peer reviewed research papers, including two edited books by Taylor and Francis. Her work has been widely covered by media and she has been interviewed by all leading newspapers in India as well as by the BBC, Le Monde and National Geographic.
