Film screening of 'Sharira' and discussion with filmmaker Ein Lall.

Sharira, a film on Chandralekha delineates some of the core ideas that the activist/performer incorporated in her choreographic works. While 'tradition' and 'modernity' coalesce in her work, she offers a critique of official and fundamentalist cultural appropriation through her art. A woman and dancer beyond her times, Chandralekha did not confirm to the mores of the perpetuated idea of the 'ideal Indian woman' or to that of her training in Bharatnatyam. By incorporating yoga and martial arts in her work, she found ways to explore and understand the dynamics of the body as well as transcend fixed notions of the aesthetics of Indian classical dance.

Ein Lall’s work as a film-maker and video artist traverses many forms and interests. In addition to several documentaries on women’s issues, she has worked independently, and with dance and theatre artists, to create installations and video dance. Amongst her best-known works are films on women artists Chandralekha, Leela Samson, Arpita Singh and Nalini Malani. Her films have been screened at several international festivals in Mumbai, Tokyo, New York, Paris, Teipei and Trivandrum.
