Event Description : Antraal theatre presents ''Mausam Ko na Janey kya ho gaya'' Hindi Play.
SynopsisMausam ko na jane kya ho gaya? – is not simply about the changing weather. It is in fact about an entire paradigm of existence which has been forced to shift. While the play is pivoted on the current spate of farmers' suicides, the intention of its creators has been to situate this in the larger pattern of intersecting and conflicting issues like neglect of agriculture, unemployment, migration, dowry deaths, cultural loss and a sense of disillusionment. With this subtle insight and drawing upon their own encounters the creators have attempted to string together seemingly unrelated occurrences of everyday life into a revealing picture of loss and survival.
To get trapped into the vicious circle of failed crops, debt, rural to urban migration and consequently despair is not only widespread but also inevitable outcome of various policy and micro- level decisions. The requirements of the international trade regime and the impact of the Government's decisions come forth to the isolated farmer in obscure ways like price rise in raw materials and diminishing profit margins. It is impossible for the farmers to link their starvation with the larger politics at play. This is why for them the issue goes beyond financial sustenance. Taking this into account the play depicts how farming is much more than an economic activity – it is situated in a social and historical context. Abandonment of farming and adoption of manual labour, especially if it involves migration or turning into a landless labourer, leads to loss of cultural identity and a sense of disloyalty to previous generations of farmers.
Further the reality of the multi-faceted oppression of women has been brought out through the use of powerful silences and a resounding symbolic presentation. Contributing with agricultural fieldwork as well as performing unpaid domestic chores, the women have had to face oppressive conditions whether or not the crop fails.
The play focuses on a family which has been practicing agriculture for many generations. However, due to changing circumstances, like high prices of GM seeds and failing rainfall, the family is not able to sustain farming as a viable activity. This provokes the elder son to move to the city much to the disapproval of the father who is unwilling to give up the traditional modes of livelihood. But does this move solve any of their problems or ends up accentuating them– is the question which the creators want the audience to ponder over.
