Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture on ‘Speech and Silence: The future of the academy’ by Prof. Supriya Chaudhuri, Professor Emeritus, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

Abstract : This lecture will focus primarily on the role of the public university in India, and its failure, as seen by the speaker, to intervene actively in debates about education and social change. In a period of national self-formation, the public (state or central) university emerged as a largely democratic and secular space where new social and intellectual aspirations could be articulated. Unfortunately, that space also housed academic rigidity and intolerance, bureaucratic pettiness, and a collective refusal to respond to changing needs and expectations. The consequence was experienced either as chaos and indiscipline, or as isolation and distrust. In India today, higher education is a subject of urgent and far-reaching changes, yet universities -- faculty and students -- are often the last to be consulted on issues directly affecting their existence. Nevertheless, the future of the academy depends on its long-abdicated function of speaking for, and speaking in, debates in the public sphere. I will ask what the future holds for the public university in India, and whether silence can be replaced by speech.

Speaker : Supriya Chaudhuri is Professor Emeritus, Department of English, Jadavpur University, and was formerly Head of the Department and Coordinator of its Centre of Advanced Study. Her areas of academic specialization include Renaissance studies, critical theory, translation, cinema, sport and cultural history. She has held visiting positions at the Universities of Cambridge and Paris, and lectured in academic institutions in India and abroad. She has occasionally advised on education policy in committees set up by the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and writes on issues to do with higher education in India.
