Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to the Weekly Seminar ‘Shram sangathano mein prakaryatmak rupantaran’ (Functional transformation in trade unions) by Dr. Pradeep Sharma, Junior Fellow, NMML.
Abstract : Indian Railways Labour Union is one of the oldest and most powerful and organized labourers’ organization of the country. This is one of the prime trade unions of Transport employees affiliated to Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) of the world. There is a tendency of violent functional transformations in the Trade Union during the past three decades. This paper proposes to underline the factors leading to this transformation. It will also throw light on the adverse impact of transformation on railway employees. The primary factors of transformation are industrial Revolution, Modern Education, Replacement of Labour force by new machines, privatization and contractership, impact of new laws, leadership in Trade Union and the gulf between the railway employees etc. The undergoing transformations witnessed on account of the aforesaid factors i.e. automatic functioning of railways industry on account of the modern technology, labour force replacement by computers, new machines, changes in labour laws, new economic policies, liberalism, the implementation of P3 Public Private participation formulae on account of privatization and globalization has been examined on the basis of its utilization. This paper identifies the negative effects on the trade unions on account of the process of modernization.
Speaker : Dr. Pradeep Kumar Sharma was awarded doctoral degree in the field of Social Sciences by Kashi Hindu Vishwa Vidyalaya in 1976-77. He was actively associated for 40 years with All India Railway Men’s Federation, Northern Railway Men’s Union, as Branch Secretary, Varanasi Mandal Adhyaksh, Lucknow Mandal. Presently he is working on a project of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library entitled “Bharatiya Rail Shramik Sangathano ki sanrachana evam prakarya par udaarikaran ka prabhav”.
