Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture in the ‘Science, Society and Nature’ series on ‘Rethinking animal-human boundaries: Musings of a primatologist’ by Dr. Sindhu Radhakrishna, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru.

Abstract : NHP or non-human primate is a term commonly used in primatology to distinguish primates from humans. Both an acknowledgement of our status as primates, as well as a reminder that we are separate from the Order, the term serves well as a starting point for any discussion on human-animal boundaries. Human interactions with primates cover a fascinating range of associations and primates, perhaps more than any other animal group, engender passionate debates on human ethics and animal sentience. In this talk I propose to explore the multifarious aspects of the human-primate interface, with particular focus on human-primate relations in India, to scrutinize how insights from some emerging disciplines urge us to rethink the ways in which we view non-human species.

Speaker : Dr. Sindhu Radhakrishna is an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru. She holds a master’s degree in psychology from Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu and a PhD in animal behaviour from Mysore University, Karnataka. Her research interests span the areas of primatology, conservation biology, animal studies and environmental education and lately, her work has focused on gaining a better understanding of relations between humans and wildlife. She is the recipient of many research grants and honours, notably the INSA Young Scientist Award in 2004 and the Nehru-Fulbright Fellowship in 2013.
