The Musical Objective
Coke Studio @ MTV brings together artists from entirely different musical backgrounds and structures, to create magical sounds that are otherwise hard to find or imagine.
At the same time, they seek to bring forth the thrill of live recordings and performances, giving audiences a taste of something they’ve never been privy to before.
Their aim is to create compositions that resonate with the youth of India and introduce them to a new sound that showcases the width of our musical landscape, by combining it with modern sounds and influences that they are familiar with.
The blueFROG Element
blueFROG having supported up and coming talent over the years is the ideal platform for this contest. Many young artists have been discovered on the blueFROG stage and have gone on to wonderful success.
BANDS
RAAGLEELA (DELHI)
RaagLeela is a Delhi based Jazz/Lounge Indian Classical project. “Raga”, the essence of Indian classical music and “leela” the playfulness, says it all. Raagleela aims to take Indian classical to the mass with world fusion. Different tracks of Raagleela depict different emotions and each has its own sound. They have fused Indian classical music with JAZZ, psychedelic rock, Dubstep funk etc. They are binding themselves into Indian classical music but at the same time have no boundaries as a complete sound. They draw influences from bands and artists like Pink Floyd Radio Head, Remember Shakti, Karsh Kale, Anoushka Shankar, Prem Joshua etc.
HEAT STROKES (JAIPUR)
Interestingly all of these four musicians who come from the same family are engaged in different professions. The guitarist, composer and vocalist Gaurav Bhatt is a software professional. Shikha and Geetika the vocalists are an architect and a teacher, respectively and Ankit who is a brilliant sitarist is a lecturer. All the members have had a proper training in music since their childhood.
BARMER BOYS (BARMER, RAJASTHAN)
The Barmer Boys are Mangey Khan (vocals, harmonium), Mangu Khan (dholak), Bhungra Khan (khartaal) and Rais Khan (morchang, bhapang, beat-boxing). Barely in their 30s, and yet seasoned performers, they carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of the Manganiyars and are leading examples of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. Their music is a harmonic blend of distinct performance styles and personalities, with the powerful and nuanced voice of Mangey leading the percussive punch and antics of Rais, Bhungra and Mangu.
The group formed in 2011, and has performed with a host of world renowned artists including Vieux Farka Toure, Bombino, BaBa ZuLa, Madou Diabate, Rupa and the April Fishes, and UK’s Jason Singh/Dharohar Project. The band's versatility of styles and bubbling energy infuses each performance - from soulful Sufi kalaams to uplifting wedding and celebratory songs, to boisterous jams with beatboxing (perhaps even a live DJ set sometimes!).
Their debut album At Home: Barmer Boys was released in December 2012 on Amarrass Records and is available in CD and mp3 format on iTunes, Amazon.com, amarrass.com and select independent music stores in the US, India and Europe. Mangey Khan is also a featured artist on the album Mitha Bol (2011, Amarrass Records), nominated for 'Folk Album of the Year' at the 2012 GiMA Awards (India's Grammies).
