Event Description : Delhi by Foot presents Baolis of Delhi : A Heritage and Architectural Exploration.
This summer go into the heart of Delhi's coolest 'Natural Air-conditioners'! On Sunday rediscover the cool corridors and corners inside heritage Baolis (Water Step-wells), understand the architectural aesthetics which make a Baoli a 'giant AC', and learn of the social lifestyle and traditional wisdom of water conservation followed by our ancestors in a bygone era .
Baolis for the uninitiated are Step-wells or Ponds which were built to collect rainwater during the monsoons and allowed people access to the receding water throughout the rest of the year. The many Baolis of Delhi are scattered across sundry forts and the older settlements of Delhi waiting to be discovered! Most lie neglected, bang in the middle of concrete jungles, with negligible water, yet they continue to fascinate us with their unique architecture.
We will visit 4 Grand Baolis of Delhi, viz. Gandak Ki Baoli and Rajon Ki Baoli in Mehrauli, the Baoli of Ferozshah Kotla and Agrasen Ki Baoli in Connaught Place
Presentation will be done both in Hindi & English.
