Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on 'The colonial origins of statutory immunities and implications for constitutional governance' by Ms. Vrinda Grover, Advocate, Supreme Court

Abstract : Immunity from criminal prosecution, was inserted in the legal codes by the British. Statutory immunities, intended to shield public servants enforcing the writ of the colonial power, have continued, been replicated and proliferated in laws enacted by the Indian Parliament. From the Privy Council to the Supreme Court of India, the interpretation of the legitimacy of this statutory shield, remains uninterrupted. Should the adoption of the Constitution, in 1950 have marked a radical departure in the interrelation, between the citizen and the state? Is it time to discard the colonial baggage of statutory immunities, in our unfinished journey from slave to subject to citizen?

Speaker : Vrinda Grover is a lawyer, researcher and human rights activist based in Delhi. She graduated from St. Stephen’s College, obtained her law degree from the University of Delhi and her Masters in Law from New York University, School of Law. As a lawyer she has appeared in landmark human rights cases. Her research and writing includes, examining the role of law in the subordination of women and interrogating the impunity of the State for targeted crimes and in conflict zones.
