Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture in the ‘Science, society and nature’ series on ‘The challenge of collective action: Ecological restoration by people in forests and cities’ by Dr. Harini Nagendra, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru.

Abstract : India is undergoing massive transformations in land cover and land use, with alarming implications for sustainability. My research examines how human-nature interactions influence land change and impact conservation. The basic question examined is - under what (social, ecological) conditions do people act as positive or negative agents for change? To answer this, I use studies in two important, interlinked types of locations representing rapid changes taking place across India – forests, and cities. The first part of my presentation will focus on forests, and the role of collective action in forest protection and recovery. The second part of the presentation examines conservation in urban environments, with a focus on research findings in Bengaluru.

Speaker : Dr. Harini Nagendra is Fellow, Suri Sehgal Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation, ATREE. Her research interests are in the fields of  satellite remote sensing, biodiversity studies and social interviews to study the impact of a range of institutional approaches, including community forestry, joint forest management and national parks on forest conservation in South Asia. Her research examines how human-environment interactions shape changes in vegetation cover, structure and biodiversity in urban and rural contexts. Specific research studies focus on urban ecology, human drivers of land use/land cover change, local institutions and livelihoods, and multi-scale biodiversity assessments. Her publications include H. Nagendra and J. Southworth, Ed.  Reforesting Landscapes: Pattern and Process, Springer Landscape Series, 2010, besides articles in various journals.
