On March 12th, 1930 Gandhi left his home in Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmadabad with a mission to gain complete freedom for India from British Rule. Gandhi and his entourage walked through 40 villages along the western coast of the state of Gujarat and reached Dandi on and Gandhi refuted the British Salt Law by making/picking up salt himself. This simple act turned to be one of the biggest symbolic acts in Indian political history.

Over a period of one year in 2009, some of India’s most well known contemporary artists travelled the same route that Mahatma Gandhi took in 1930 to better understand Gandhi’s role in contemporary Indian history and in the future of India’s cultural and social fabric. The artworks presented have been specially created for this exhibition.

The project is presented by Ojas Art, a Delhi based art gallery and is curated by Anubhav Nath and Johny ML. 

The show has been previously shown in Delhi at Lalit Kala Akademi (2010) and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (2011) and after the Nehru Centre, London shall be exhibited at The Gandhi Memorial Center, Washington DC.
