Event Description : Select CITYWALK Collaborates with Kiran Nadar Museum of Art To present Cheap Rice-An Art Installation by Subodh Gupta.

Cheap Rice:  "A rickshaw puller carries the burden of a city loaded with Spirituality and all he gets in return is a meager amount, which can't buy him anything more than cheap rice. The lotas are used to carry the holy water and the brass here is symbolic of the wealthier lot" (S. Gupta quoted in N. Sharma,Indian Express, 4 January 2008).

Note on the Artist : Subodh Gupta’s sculptural installations dare to place the mass-produced, everyday utilitarian object into works of art, dislodging their known function and meaning to reflect upon the layered contemporary Indian reality , caught between hurried economic transformation , hard consumerism and poverty. The title of his works are intriguing and deliberate as the artist chooses to evoke multiple meanings that refer to contrary realities of prosperity and poverty, consumption and deprivation, excess and loss in the Indian context. Born in Khagaul, Bihar, in 1964, Subodh Gupta is a leading contemporary Indian artist who has won national and international acclaim through his cutting-edge art practice. He studied art at the College of Art, Patna in 1983-88. Recipient of several awards and artist residencies, he has exhibited widely across the world with several historic exhibitions to his fame.
