Event Description : William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale' a Tadpole Repertory and Wide Aisle production in English and Hindustani

About the play : Written toward the end of William Shakespeare’s theatrical career, THE WINTER’S TALE is a story of loss and redemption. In a fit of wild and unfounded jealousy, Leontes, the King of Sicily, convinces himself that his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship, starting a chain of events that spans sixteen years and two continents. Winter and summer, tragedy and comedy, Sicilia and Bohemia meet in this extraordinary play that has given us one of the most  theatrically exciting endings in all of English drama.
The Winter's Tale is a transcendent work of death and revival, exploring irrational jealousy, the redemptive world of nature, and the magical power of art. Sweeping across two continents and two generations, it is a play of suspicions and secrets, with the mythic beauty of a fairytale. It has charmed theatre audiences for over four hundred years and yet remains quite unknown and under-appreciated here in India.
Our production presents the text in all its vitality and in two languages - English and Hindustani - with an ensemble cast of actors from across the country. It is being staged outdoors, at  Zorba the Buddha, a beguiling property just off the MG road in Ghitorni. The audience will move between locations as the play unfolds against a vivid landscape.
