Event Description : 'Life-World in a Cross-Cultural Marriage' a talk by Prof. Renuka Singh, CSSS/SSS, Jawaharlal Nehru University Owing to modernization and globalization, there has been an increase in the number of India nationals traveling to far-off lands to study, work and visit; concomitantly there has been an increase in cross-cultural marriages. This paper is based on my research done in India, North America and Europe, and it deals with the challenges and promises of a cross-cultural marriage, wherein one spouse is an Indian and the other a non-Indian, more usually non-native. In this paper, the nature, form, content and direction of cross-cultural marriage has been explored along with its experiential dimension. The method used used is that of the written narrative, self-reporting and interviews. It enables one to avoid excessive systematization that necessitates a reduction and one-dimensional discourse and claims to completeness. In any given area, work always needs to be done and hopefully my paper will not create closures but instead, open up avenues for further critical examinations from our fruitful incompleteness. Thus, the fundamental question of the individual having the potential of agency in any given culture signifies the life-changing course of our subjects.
