One snowy night a girl of exceptional beauty pays a surprise visit to the humble cottage of the
peasant Taiju. Saying that her name is Tsuru (Crane), she maintains that she will make a hard-
working and devoted wife to the young man.
Taiju leads a precarious but honest life with his old, bedridden mother, Yura. Naturally, they welcome her proposal with great joy.
Tsuru proves to be the faithful, hard-working wife she promised. One day, coming across an old
handloom in a tiny room that belonged to her mother-in-law, she asks for permission to use it herself.
But before entering the room to weave, she makes Taiju promise her not to watch. Then without
even a break to eat, she works all through the night. In the morning she appears with a roll of fabric.
Taiju and Yura are astonished - it is the most beautiful cloth they have ever seen.
Taiju at once takes it to sell to the wealthy landlord of llanawa. Excited by this unexpected windfall, he fails to notice Tsuru’s exhaustion.
Umaemon, a neighbour, hears about the transaction and urges Taiju to have his wife weave again, for he craftily plans to make an even better deal with a rich merchant in town.
Meanwhile, Yura has been growing uneasy about Tsuru's origins. Tsuru never talks about her
background, saying simply that she is an orphan from a distant mountainous village. The landlord suddenly summons Taiju and orders him to bring, more fabric of the same quality. Taiju at first refuses, as he remembers Tsuru had told him she could only make such material once. But the landlord insists and threatens to dispossess Taiju of his land. On the other hand, however, Taiju will get double the money plus the land he is working.
Shocked by this situation, Tsuru resignedly decides to try one more time for the sake of her husband and his mother. Reminding him of his promise not to watch, she enters the tiny room to weave
Taiju and Yura nervously wait out the long night. The sound of the loom weakens.
Yura is reminded of an old fairy tale of a crane incarnate and she tells it to her son. The sound of the loom suddenly stops. Mother and son look at each other wordlessly. Day slowly dawns. The sound of the loom is now unsteady and Taiju's worry about Tsuru increases to the point where he violates his promise to her and looks into the room.
He is amazed to see a crane faintly weaving delicate white cloth - marked with a bloodstain.
Tsuru soon wearily staggers out and reveals that she is the crane that Taiju had once saved, and that she had wanted to repay him. Thanking them for their kindness, she then disappears. Looking up into the sky, Taiju sees a crane slowly flying away.
