Comment by the filmmaker : In 1993, when I documented the previously unphotographed 10th-century murals of the Brhadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, there was a very enthusiastic response from art historians around the world.  They felt that these provided evidence of the fact that there was a continuous tradition of painting in India, coming from ancient times.  The exquisite murals of Ajanta were well known.  However, they had been seen almost as a flash in the pan, owing to the lack of documentation and awareness of other early Indian paintings.

This film presents rarely-seen mural paintings, which are the fountainhead of a deeply- connected and continuous tradition of art. Manuscript paintings and schools of miniatures from all over India and across the centuries are also presented.  This film establishes the fact of a pan-Indian heritage of painting, coming from 2,000 years ago.
