Event Description : Theatre Workshop - Sitting Around Difference with Rebecca Mwase
Utilizing story circle methodology, congregational singing, individual derived movement and writing, this workshop will explore personal relationships to difference as they relate to gender, race, religion and class. Participants will be encouraged to search for connection points and discover if story telling and performance can lead to liberation. Rebecca Mwase will introduce participants to tools for mining personal experience and expanding expression using the story circle methodolgy made popular by the Free Southern Theater and Junebug Productions of New Orleans, LA. Participants will practice the art of listening, the creation of embodied text and explore the nuances of vocal expression.
Rebecca Mwase is an award-winning theatre artist based in New Orleans, LA. Her work lies at the intersections of race, gender, religion and class and seeks to illuminate and question the power structures that control our society. To that end, she is committed to arts education working with ArtSpot Productions, Junebug Productions and Goat in the Road Productions to educate local artists, students and communities in effective ways to harness the creative arts for social change and empowerment. Rebecca is also committed to creating original, ensemble, devised work and was seen most recently in ArtSpot Productions' “Kiss, Kiss Julie” and Voices Organized in Creative Dissent’s (VOIC’D) “Lockdown"
