Event Description : The Gati Studio presents 'Subbody Butoh' a dance workshop with Akshi aka Agu.
Butoh began in Japan in 1959 through the works of Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. It is a dance of life and darkness. A dance art that goes beyond self-expression, Butoh is a journey through and beyond the body, exploring creativity, originality and the resonance-ability of life. ‘Subbody’ means the subconscious body. In the subconscious world, the subconsciousness and body melt into oneness and create a world completely different from the daily world. The dancer dances life memories, feelings & experiences folded in the body and explores their interactions with physical elements such as gravity, air, light, sound and mental elements such as dreams, illusions and hallucinations. These elements are always streaming and transforming in strange and
complex ways.
In December 2012, at the end of the 5th Himalayan Butoh Festival, Akshi received her graduation certificate along with the name Agu, after completing two years of midwife and creation course at Subbody Butoh Foundation, Dharamsala. Agu has been studying and practicing butoh under the guidance of Rhizome Lee, a Japanese subbody butoh practitioner and researcher. She’s now a subbody butoh midwife and performer; wherein, a midwife is a facilitator of the birth of another’s life’s creativity. She has conducted workshops and performed at the Himalayan Butoh Festivals in Dharamsala and at different venues in Delhi. Previously, she has trained in Bharatanatyam and
completed a diploma in movement arts and mixed media from Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore.
