Event Description : New York City-based dance company, Delhi Dance Theater (DDT) creates and curates dance, music, and film. Under the direction of American choreographer, Leah Curtis, Delhi Dance Theater presents the Indian premiere of a multi-classical dance work, Beneath the Tamarind Tree. Come and watch an exciting new company explore expressions in Indian Classical and Western dance techniques accompanied by an original live musical score, in this enchanting environment.

Delhi Dance Theater has enjoyed two seasons in NYC and after a successful New York debut of Beneath the Tamarind Tree in 2012, DDT is excited to bring the production to premiere in Delhi. Beneath The Tamarind Tree uses elements of Ballet, Modern and Kathak in an exploration of movement and rhythmic themes. The performance on 20 January 2013 will feature a new team of Delhi-based artists alongside its original cast and choreographers, Leah Raphael Curtis (US), Emily McLoughlin (UK) and Lydia Walker (US). There will be original compositions, played live, composed by Fakhroddin Ghaffari (Iran), a premier persussionist, part of MTV Coke Studio Season II, who has worked with famous artists such as Abida Parveen and founder of the Delhi-based band World Ethnic Music Ensemble; Asha Emma McCarthy (UK) a cellist currently studying Hindustani music with Sasia Rao De Haas; Daniel Rangel (Mexico) on spanish guitar, a composer and guitarist of Marasma Trio, who currently studies Sitar and Hindustani music with Pandit Shubhendra Rao; and Gyan Singh on Tabla, a student of Pandit Suresh Talwalker and a member of Mrigya. Beneath the Tamarind Tree features Kathak performances by Ritushri Chaudhuri and Anasua Majumdar diciples of Pt Birju Maharaj, and Goura Prema (US) founder of Natya Nectar Dance Company, and a student of Kathak for ten years and a diciple Srimati Kavitha Trakur and Pundit Rajender Ganganji. Also performing are Suhail Bhan, a solo bharatnatyan and contemporary performer, holding a post diploma from Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra Delhi, a semi-finalist on India’s Got Talent Khoj 2, and Hritik Roshan’s Just Dance top 20 dancer; as well as contemporary dancer Palden Lama Mowrah of Dance India Dance and India’s Got Talent.
Director, Leah Curtis, has worked throughout India for the past four years teaching and collaborating with a number of Indian artists. Delhi Dance Theater was born out of her desire to unite her knowledge of Western classical dance with the traditional classical dance forms of India. DDT draws upon Indian classical dance techniques and themes, working in collaboration with Indian artists to find parallels with western classical dance techniques. DDT develops and explores new movement that stays true to the traditions of classical dance but is progressive, colourful, and evolving.

Delhi Dance Theater is a registered non-profit organization in the United States and is thrilled to be in Delhi at the kind invitation of Natya Nectar Dance Company who were featured in this seasons India’s Got Talent.
