Event Description : “Sense and Sensuality” (focused on a group of designs that reinterpret the traditional yet syncretic beliefs, practices and attitudes that revolve around gender and spirituality in India)

Graphic Designer Divya Thakur presents a new series of works “Sense and Sensuality”: at Nature Morte, Oberoi Gurgaon. This time,Divya has focused on a group of designs that reinterpret the traditional yet syncretic beliefs, practices and attitudes that revolve around gender and spirituality in India. “Sense and Sensuality” builds a visual narrative by using design objects that are a part of  our contemporary way of life.
Sense & Sensuality builds a visual narrative through artifacts that include limited edition wall art, mirrors, floor rugs, lights, wall art and multi functional modular units that are ingeniously crafted to fit into the urban Indian household.
A thoughtfully curated collection of everyday objects, each of these is a physical manifestation of the explicit and the implicit.
The foundation is laid with a group of wool pile carpets from the “Floored!” series, replicating geometric patterns found in domestic and sacred architectural spaces. Arranged on top of this are the puzzle-like constructions entitled “Indian Order.” This modular system, inspired by pillars found in temples and mosques, allows for multiple functions through limitless combinations.
Taking the series further are Divya Thakur's “Lingam Candles.” Completing the show are selections of limited edition prints created by Divya from three collections (“Erogenius,” “Animania,” and “India Cool”) as well as the “Peacock Mirror,” a tribute to Narcissism.
While objects such as the Lingam Candle lights are inherently and visually phallic in nature, the Indian Order pedestals - though inspired by temple pillars - also incorporate concave design elements that subtly convey a very basic desire to indulge in voyeurism.
The Erogenius graphic art is an illustrated interpretation of sexual positions through various natural forms and decorative patterns. Twelve artworks depict twelve positions from various treatises on love (Kama Sutra, Ananga Ranga, etc.) originating from India. These positions are named after certain natural forms and objects they resemble. To impart a contemporary edge and relevance, same sex couples have been included as well.
The Floored! rugs are a restrained representation of amorous love and spirituality. Drawing from both Islamic and Hindu philosophies, they represent the male and female union in infinity.
Derived from the tremendously well received Animania collection, the Peacock Floor and Console Mirrors examine the idea of self-love and vanity. The Animania wall art, on the other hand, represents the vahanas/vehicles of Indian gods connected to love, sexuality, and fertility within the celestial sphere.
The India Cool graphic art is a pop-art comment on cultural clichés about gender and sexuality in urban India today.
