In a precursor to the Amarrass Desert Festival.
Turquoise Cottage, in its continuing endeavor to celebrate music in the city presents the lilting strains of the “Barmer Boys” as a precursor to the Amarrass Desert Music Festival. The festival, being held in the first week of December, will see a stellar line-up of world class musicians coming together in Delhi, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the desert regions of the world.

The Barmer Boys are Mangey Khan (vocals, harmonium), Mangu Khan (dholak), Bhungra Khan (khartal) and Rais Khan (morchang, bhapang). Barely in their 30’s, and yet seasoned performers, they carry forward the centuries old musical tradition of the Manganiyars and are leading examples of Rajasthani folk and sufi music. The group was formed in 2011, and their music is a harmonic blend of distinct performance styles and personalities. Mangey Khan, who belongs to a family of illustrious singers, has an electrifying voice and is equally at home singing traditional Marwari wedding songs or belting out Sufi qawwalis. He also plays the harmonium (similar to the reed organ or the accordion) Mangu Khan plays the dholak (a hand drum widely used in North Indian folk music) and lays the percussive bed for the group’s vocal and instrumental pieces. Bhungra Khan adds a second layer of percussion to the ensemble, with his khartal (a pair of rosewood castanets). This instrument is essential to Rajasthani folk, and wielded in the hands of Bhungra it takes on magical notes. Rais Khan, technically is not a “Barmer boy”, as he hails from Jaisalmer district a couple of hundred kilometres to the north. He is a gifted musician who plays the morchang (Jew’ s harp) and the bhapang (a single stringed talking drum) A keen experimenter with sounds, he has also added beat-boxing to his
repertoire. The group has performed to critical acclaim at festivals, in India and Internationally as well. Their debut album comes out on Amarrass records in 2012.
