Abstract : This paper seeks to ‘find the gap and fill it up’ in portraying the Indian nationalist campaign against the indentured emigration during the early twentieth century. It looks into the nationalist discourse on the indentured and tries to figure out the way in which Indian nationalists molded their criticism of the system. This paper interrogates the elitism and casteism of Indian nationalists and argues that the question of indentured Indians was not the key issue of concern for them till the first decade of twentieth century but the issue became a meaning full campaign from the beginning of second decade of 20th century. My paper also portrays the nationalist campaign against indentured in public sphere in some details.
