Details for Kriintan, Friends of Music and Teamwork Production:
KRINTAN
Literally, “tremor” krintan is a musical term used primarily for string instruments to
mark the deliberate shiver that evokes pure emotion.
Krintan, the company, aims to bring this tremor to heartstrings all over the world.
Conceived as an organisation which will produce and promote performance art rooted
in or connected with meaningful music, Krintan has been dedicated by Sharat Chandra
Srivastava, to the memory of his grandfather and guru, Pandit Joi Srivastava of the Senia
gharana.
Pandit Joi Srivastava
Born in Allahabad on January 1st, 1930, Pt. Srivastava had already made a name for
himself by the time he was 17, having performed a duet with his own guru, Ustad
Allauddin Khan at that age. Such was the magic of his violin that when he played, famous
poet and litterateur, Pandit Harivansh Rai Bachchan would wait outside his house,
sometimes for an hour, rather than enter and interrupt him.
Invited by Pandit Ravi Shankar to join the national orchestra at All India Radio, he came
to Delhi in 1957 and there blended Carnatic music with the Dhrupad genre he had been
trained in to develop a unique method of violin playing.
He chose to forgo fame in favour of passing on his knowledge, teaching for several years
at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi but retained the respect of his contemporaries
like Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and others. His grandson, Sharat Chandra Srivastava,
perpetuates this legacy as his only student to continue teaching in the traditional guru-
shishya parampara (guru-disciple tradition).
