Event Details : ‘Jus Jazz 2012’ is a jazz-festival initiated by ‘Jazz-Addicts’ – an association of serious jazz enthusiasts. The event is an endeavor to introduce the finest world-class mainstream and classical jazz to India – the kind of music heard from the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Brubeck and vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

Igor Butman: This virtuoso saxophonist and skilled band leader from Russia was trained by the remarkable musician and brilliant teacher Gennady Goldstein. Igor’s skill is well recognized worldwide so much so that even the former US President Bill Clinton praised him by calling Igor his “favorite living saxophone player”. In 2009 he launched his own jazz label called “Butman Music”.
Sylvia Cuenca: Being an active young drummer contributing outstanding performances to the New York jazz scene, Sylvia has recently been performing as part of trumpet legend Clark Terry’s quintet. Her achievements include several tours to Europe and the United States with saxophonist Joe Henderson; she has also received critical acclaim from major music publications for her independent release called ‘The Crossing’.
Dee Daniels: Whether accompanying herself at the piano, fronting a trio, big band or symphony, Dee Daniels’ musical career is as varied as her four-octave vocal range. Critics have attributed her voice to have a hypnotic quality and her extensive career includes performances in twelve African countries, Australia, South America, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Japan, throughout North America, and many countries within Europe. She has also been a recipient of numerous certifications, awards and honors.
Russell Malone: Russell is an essentially self-taught swing and bebop jazz guitarist that tours regularly as the leader of the Russell Malone Quartet and more recently in support of “Triple Play” (2010) of the Russell Malone Trio. Malone was once part of the Diana Krall trio, participating in three Grammy-nominated albums and he has also toured the US, Canada, Japan, and Europe, South America, and Australia.
Steve Masakowski: Considered to be one of the top jazz artists from New Orleans, Steve Masakowski is well known for having performed with Grammy Winning artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Nicholas Payton and Dianne Reeves at major festivals around the world. He has twice been voted “Best Guitarist” and won “Best Contemporary Jazz Group” three times by the Gambit and Offbeat magazines in their annual reader’s polls. He has participated in numerous jazz concerts and workshops at major universities including Princeton, the University of Chicago, and the University of Indiana.
Helen Sung: Winner of the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition, pianist & composer Helen Sung has been called “one of the brightest emerging stars in jazz today”. Sung is a noted band-leader with several critically acclaimed albums and she has recently made appearances at events like the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival, Seattle’s Earshot Festival, Fontana Chamber Arts Summer Festival and the Cliffard Brown Festival.
Diane Witherspoon: Singer, composer and producer; Jazz vocalist Diane Witherspoon has a soulful, personal sound that borrows elements of gospel and blues. She is an international singer with over 20 years of experience and has performed in various countries like Bangkok, Japan, Africa, France, Russia, Switzerland, Ireland, Chile, Egypt, Dubai and even in India. She has performed with the likes of Calvin Keys, Cedar Walton, Bobby McFerrin, Billy Higgins, “Cleanhead” Vinson, Frank Morgan, Eddie Henderson and many more.
Wayne Escoffery: Born into a musical household, Escoffery heard his guitarist father play reggae and listened to R&B from his mother’s record collection. Later on, Escoffery joined The New Haven Trinity Boys Choir and began taking saxophone lessons from Malcom Dickinson. After attending the Jazzmobile in New York City, and the ACES Educational Center for the arts, Escoffery quickly established himself on the local music scene playing with many leading jazz musicians. He has established a secure reputation for his technical skill, especially his very effective and intelligent improvising.
