Event Details : Gopal Sharman’s world-famous stage production 'The Ramayana' English Play.
Akshara Theatre is proud to present its latest production of Gopal Sharman’s classic play The Ramayana: a contemporary interpretation of the epic.
The Ramayana was originally performed as a one-woman solo tour-de-force performance by the celebrated actress Jalabala Vaidya, who performed it on Broadway, London’s West End, United Nations Headquarters, National Theatres of Europe, Canada, as far as the Fiji Islands, as well as in 35 Indian cities and towns: from Mumbai to Manipal, Kolkata to Jammu, Delhi to Calicut -- to packed houses, rave reviews and standing ovations worldwide – creating dramatic history.
In this production of The Ramayana, Jalabala takes on the parts of the Contemporary Person, the Katha Vachaka, Dasharatha, Rama and Sita at different points in the play, creating an exciting and innovative theatrical experience, while a cast of exciting and talented young actors performs the other scenes.
The actors includes Jalabala’s talented grand-daughter Nisa as Sita, Vikalp Mudgal as Rama and Vidur Mohan as Ravana. Angad Thakur plays Bharata, Abhinav Chand plays Lakshmana, Shaily Priya Pandey plays Mandodari, while Hanuman is played by two actors: Mahant Shah and Dhruv Shetty.
The production retains the dramatic intensity of Gopal Sharman’s script, which led the New York Times to dub it as “India’s Gift to Broadway”, exploring the human characters of Rama and Sita, with reverence, delicacy and insight, through some of the most exquisite stage writing in modern theatre.
Together, Gopal, Jalabala and their young cast explore the magic and mystery of Rama – “in whose voice the dumb babble love’s profundities and the lame prance gaily over unscaled peaks.”
The play written in English by Gopal Sharman, went onto Broadway and has been performed over 2000 times by Jalabala Vaidya. Now we stage a full cast produciton with students from Delhi trained under Gopal Sharman and Jalabala Vaidya bringing the entire production under a whole new light.
