Synopsis : Brought up in a remote country village, unhappy, disagreeable Mugiko Morishita goes up to Tokyo to stay with her aunt, Kocho, who runs a geisha establishment, to try to improve herself. While attending high school, she also serves as apprentice geisha with the name Suzume. Yet she still remains unable to communicate
with the people around her and retires into a shell. At school she falls in love with Kunihiko Tsuda, the school boxing club hero who already has a girlfriend, the pretty and popular Kyoko.
Seeing and sympathizing with her troubles, Tasumi, an old retainer, takes her to the grave of the passionate Yaoya Oshichi. There, he tells about her unknown mother Yukiko whom she had hated so much. Something in her begins to change.
At school one day she gets angry with Kyoko and her friends when they cruelly torment a classmate. A fight ensues and when Kunihiko tries to stop it, he only gets injured for his pains. At her aunt's, Ageha, the most popular geisha who had been a kind guide to Suzume, suddenly disappears with her lover. Though shocked, Suzume is determined to continue studying the geisha arts. At the annual autumn school festival, she finally accepts the role of the famous Yaoya Oshichi and begins training under her aunt's guidance.
On the day of the festival she dances well, but just before the curtain comes down the ladder she is standing on breaks and she falls. She is in an agony of disappointment and refuses to move while the show continues. But suddenly Kunihiko comes to her and
takes her out to the school grounds where he lights the bonfire. Suzume begins dancing gracefully around the fire; truly happy for the first time in her life.
