Event Details : Workshop - Indian Dance History and Functionality with Urmimala Sarkar
The workshop will bring in videos of different dance practices to generate a dialogue about the functions that dance has performed for centuries, sometimes acting as a tool to establish community identity, being used to regenerate social bonds or at others, becoming the principal communicative tool. The principal aim of the workshop is to generate an awareness of the restricted history/histories and functions of dance that we acknowledge in our everyday lives.

Urmimala Sarkar has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and teaches Dance Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU, Delhi. She is the Vice President and Co-Chair of Research and Documentation of the World Dance Alliance – Asia Pacific. Currently she is the Secretary of Dance Alliance – India, a registered voluntary body of dancers, dance scholars, teachers, critics, and enthusiasts.
