Event Details : 'Act & Accomplish' A collaborative project between Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Khoj International Artists' Asociation and Nature Morte.
Participants: Julia Prezewowsky, Kym Ward, Barbara J. Scheuermann (Germany) and Abhishek Hazra, Aditya Pande, Rattanamol Singh Johal (India).
The performances, discussions, lectures and installations at Nature Morte emerge from a two-week residency in New Delhi involving artists and curators from Germany and India thinking around how the contemporary art world is 'professionalizing' by borrowing heavily from recent business literature and the operations of corporate entities (branding, asset management etc.). Enquiries are made into the nature and forms of performance, training, competition and evaluation that constitute the measure of an artist's success. Programs will run in the gallery through the duration of the exhibition.
The concept of the project is to further research the idea of performance as staging and as accomplishment. In this context the participants look at the construction of a marketable self, how that functions in the art world, and how the culture of the art market might have an effect on the persona of the artist and the work’s reception. The new myth of the artist operates inside ambivalent structures: between ideal-typical, pre-established forms of behavior and, within those, a pointedly individual performance. What are the parameters, gestures and forms of such a performance? The understanding of “performance” in this context includes two senses of the word, as staging and as accomplishment. What kind of performance will lead to success? How does the political figure in all this? These are just some of the questions the artists and writers have been grappling with during the residency.
Abhishek Hazra interrogates an artist’s position as a political actor/activist and performs the part of one condemned to inaction, quoting Ai Weiwei. In another video, he explores the figure of the ‘incompetent enthusiast. The sculptural interventions by Aditya Pande evolve from two laconic words which get blurred during the drawing process, in the same way the meaning of a word tends to dissolve the longer one analyses it. Julia Prezewowsky invites a motivational speaker, a career coach, a tarot card reader, curators, a gallerist and others to offer their expertise as a service to interested persons in a carefully constructed “transformation center”. Kym Ward explores the formal properties of an art object, its purpose and value by inviting viewers to join a focus group on the subject while also commenting on the artist’s position in the process. Curators Rattanamol Singh Johal and Barbara J. Scheuermann provide texts and participate in the exhibition programming.
