Abstract : Both politics and society are showing signs of metamorphosis in Uttar Pradesh. While there is a transition from caste based ‘exclusionary’ politics to ‘inclusive’ politics in UP, the society there is also struggling to break the shackles of castes, and move towards ‘classes’. In both these simultaneous and interconnected transitions, social engineering is playing an important role. We seek to look at and analyse these transitions through the lens of electoral politics.

Speaker : Dr. A. K. Verma teaches Politics at Christ Church College, Kanpur. His research interest focuses on the politics of Uttar Pradesh. He has explained the rise of exclusionary politics and transition to inclusive politics in Uttar Pradesh through ‘Social Osmosis’ and ‘Reverse Social Osmosis’. He had been invited by several foreign universities including Harvard, UCL (Berkeley), ISAS, Singapore and Australian National University. He helped NCERT in preparation of New Generation of Text Books for Political Science mainly ‘Indian Constitution at Work’. Dr. Verma is associated with Lokniti, CSDS, Delhi as State Coordinator (UP). He also writes for Indian media and appears on TV channels.
